The LLCC Foundation recently concluded accepting applications for grants made possible from generous gifts of LLCC faculty and staff to the L.E.A.G.U.E. (Leaders Establishing Annual Gifts Underwriting Education) campaign. The grant awards will be announced at the kickoff for the 2008 campaign, March 25, 2008.
These grants help to advance educational excellence at Lincoln Land Community College.
Since LEAGUE began, more than $140,000 has been returned to the college in faculty/staff grants and scholarships.
Departments receiving grants from last year's LEAGUE funds included:
- Student Life - for improvements to the student lounge
- Agriculture – to purchase a computer and other hardware for recruiting activities
- English/Humanities and Library – for the development of a minority literature collection in the Library
- Nursing – for specialized training in the use of care of SIM-Man, a portable and advanced simulation-based educational tool to challenge and test students’ clinical and decision-making skills during realistic patient care scenarios
- Public Information – to support the LLCC Student Ambassadors in attending a challenge course designed to enhance leadership and communication skills
- TEAL (Training and Education for Adult Learners) Program – to support a pilot program teaching chess to adult learners to foster reasoning, critical thinking and math skills
- Special Needs and Instructional Technology/Distance Education – to purchase video iPods for students with disabilities toward the development of an on-demand testing service
- English as a Second Language/TEAL – to purchase interactive CD-ROMS for the computer labs in both Beardstown and Springfield
Nearly 40 percent of LLCC faculty and staff give annually to the LLCC Foundation.
Eligibility
A dollar limit has not been placed on L.E.A.G.U.E. grants. Historically, the Foundation has funded projects such as:
- Computer hardware and software
- Guest speaker fees
(Note: Requesting department would be responsible for the speaker’s travel expenses including hotel, airfare, meals, and other related items.)
- Resources to improve and enhance the learning environment including DVDs, microscopes, digital and video cameras, maps, printers, scanners, projectors, proximas and more.
At this time, the Foundation does not fund travel or salaries.
Requirements
- Faculty applications must be signed by the submitting faculty member and the department chair.
- Administrative and staff applications must be signed by the applicant and his/her immediate supervisor.
- Applicants requesting funds for computers and/or computer hardware/software must have the request authorized by the Chief Information Officer in Information and Telecommunication Systems at 786-2476. Applications requesting computer equipment will not be accepted without the appropriate signature(s).
- Grant recipients must use grant funds by the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2007) and will be required to submit to the LLCC Foundation Board of Directors by January 15, 2008, a written evaluation detailing the outcomes of the project.
- Applicants whose projects are funded may be asked to attend a meeting of the LLCC Foundation Board of Directors to report on their respective projects.
- All awards belong to the college, not the recipient.
