Frequently Asked Questions

What is a scholarship?
A scholarship is a sum of money awarded to a student to help with the cost of education. Scholarships should not be relied upon for full funding of all college expenses. LLCC Foundation scholarships range from $200 to $2,500 for an academic year.

Will I have to pay back a scholarship?
Scholarships are made possible by generous community businesses, organizations and individuals who donate money and are interested in helping LLCC students succeed. Scholarships are a gift to the recipient and do not have to be repaid.

Do I have to be a top student to get a scholarship?
Most LLCC Foundation scholarships have a minimum grade point average (GPA).  Some scholarships do not require any minimum GPA, but may have other criteria.

What are scholarship criteria?
Scholarship criteria are qualifications established by the donor. Criteria may entail pursuing a certain program of study (major), having graduated from a specific high school, living in a specific city or county, having affiliations with organizations, being enrolled at LLCC full-time or part-time or other requirements. Each scholarship has different criteria.

What is financial need? Do I have to apply for federal financial aid?
If you have a special circumstance that hinders your ability to pay for college, you have financial need. You are not required to apply for federal financial aid to be eligible for a Foundation scholarship.

Am I considered a first-time college student if I took LLCC classes while in high school?
If you graduated early from high school and enrolled at LLCC in the Spring semester or took LLCC classes while in high school, you are considered a first-time college (FTC) student because your high school classmates are considered FTC students. Your high school GPA will be used to consider your eligibility for scholarships.

What makes a scholarship application complete?
An application is complete when all of the following have been submitted on or before the deadline dates:

  • The application and other documentation requested for specific scholarships, and
  • Two recommendations.
First-time college students must also submit:
  • a high school certification and official transcript or copy of GED certificate.
Continuing college students must also submit:
  • an unofficial LLCC transcript or official transcript from any other post-secondary institution.

Who can complete the recommendation forms?
We suggest recommendations come from individuals who have a professional relationship with the applicant, such as a teacher or employer, or from individuals who have first-hand knowledge of the applicant’s characteristics.  Recommendations should NOT be from family members.

Do I need to apply more than once?
Applicants need to apply only once each academic year. If you do not receive an LLCC Foundation scholarship or you are awarded a one-year scholarship, apply again for the next academic year.

How will I know if I have been awarded a scholarship?
Applicants are sent letters after the appropriate selection meeting informing them of their status. Scholarship recipients are sent contracts they must sign and return by a deadline date.
